Meet Snow Monkey Athlete Ambassador: Anna Weis

Today’s a big day.

We’re welcoming Anna Weis of USA Sailing to the Tribe as our newest Athlete Ambassador.

She’s a total badass hailing from Fort Lauderdale, FL and is currently in New Zealand prepping for Worlds, the first half of Olympic trials for sailing, which will begin on November 29.

Anna reached out to us after reading about the Snow Monkey story and we instantly knew we had to share her story with the rest of you. She’s a true example of what it means to take life by the reins and make your dreams reality through hard work, dedication, and straight up hustle.

We’d try to tell her story ourselves, but obviously she’s much better at it. So, we sat down with her (and by “sat” we really mean collaborated on a Google Doc because she’s off doing casual things like trying to go to the Olympics) to ask a few questions about her journey as a professional, female sailor, her take on health and wellness, what keeps her motivated, and much, much more.

Check it out Snow Monkeys! And be sure to follow her journey on Instagram at @weisanna and @gibbsweisracing.

Where are you from and where are you currently living/spending your time? I am from Fort Lauderdale, FL. Because of my competition and training schedule recently, I have been moving all over the place, but I head to New Zealand soon and will spend two months there.

How and when did you get into sailing? I got into sailing when I was about 7 years old. We lived right near a yacht club, which still to this day has one of the top sailing programs in the country. My older brother started in the program and of course me being the little sibling, I needed to do everything my brother did. I got hooked and had amazing coaches and friends that I am still extremely close with today. I grew up playing tons of other sports as well, however something special about sailing is that the friends you make will be with you for the rest of your life, which now looking back, I never really felt in other sports. I think the friends I made were what really kept me engaged, especially at a young age.

You studied at Boston University for 2.5 years before taking a leave of absence to pursue your dream of becoming an Olympian. What was it like to make that decision? How did you do it? The decision in itself was extremely easy for me personally. It was funny. Riley, my teammate, actually asked me to sail with him during my final exams. I immediately called my parents and started talking about sailing and doing this Olympic campaign. They kept telling me to hang up the phone and study. It’s safe to say I was very distracted in finishing up my exams. All of my coaches and advisors at BU were very supportive of me taking a leave of absence and I am extremely grateful for that. I knew school would always be there, so I had to take the chance to pursue my dream. Packing up my whole dorm last minute was probably the most stressful thing!

What advice would you give to someone who is in a position where they have an incredible opportunity to pursue their dreams, however taking that opportunity also comes with potential risk? The sailor in me would say “send it!” Life is too short to not take risks. If you want something, you should go after it. My dad always taught me that there are going to be risks with everything that you do. I’ve learned the more you commit to something, your once dream or goal will become reality. Go for it!

As an athlete, what is your approach to health and nutrition? How do you fuel your everyday adventures? I have always been super into nutrition and how certain foods affect the body. There is no doubt that eating clean can really change your energy and fuel levels to perform at your best. I find I feel the best eating whole foods with lots of fruits and vegetables. Obviously, it’s hard to eat clean all the time, especially on the road, but I try to make do the best that I can.

In order for the body to perform to its best ability, it needs to be properly nourished. But what many people forget is how important it is for your mind to be well taken care of, too. What do you do to maintain your mental focus? How do you take care of your body AND your mind? I think the mind is just as important as the body. Maintaining mental focus is very challenging and something I am trying to fine tune everyday. I have my jobs every day that I need to get done to make sure I am fully ready for sailing that day. Ticking things off of that checklist helps me stay focused and ready to go mentally. Knowing that I did things that are in my control really helps me get in the right mindset. At the end of the day, alone time allows me to relax and unwind and reflect on the day, so I know what I need to do better the next day. Also, staying hydrated and getting enough sleep is very important for my body and mind. I’ve found the more well rested and hydrated I am, the more I am thinking clearly and keeping my mind sharp.

What is it like to be a female athlete? Being a female athlete is pretty darn cool! I feel like there will always be this stigma that women aren’t as strong or fit as men. As a female athlete sailing in a mixed gender boat, it is really cool to be competing against other teams where men have the same job as me. I have kind of always embraced this stigma and have used it as motivation to keep getting stronger. I think it’s so cool to be super strong and powerful and to be able to fully tackle any physical or mental challenge ahead of me. When it comes to girls in general, I still feel like I’m going against the grain by wanting to lift weights and be as strong and fit as I can possibly be. I hope this perception changes because it’s rewarding and empowering to be a female and an athlete.

Why did you want to partner with Snow Monkey? I wanted to partner with Snow Monkey mainly for two reasons. One the product itself. It tastes amazing and is just straight up FUEL. Second, what the brand represents. I want to promote my belief that we should all be living a healthy and active lifestyle. I am inspired by the Snow Monkey founders’ determination and enthusiasm of creating a company that is so much more than just a delicious, nutritious product. Snow Monkey’s mission of strength through accessible, healthy living is everything I stand for. I am so excited to be a part of the Tribe!

Tell us something you think is important. What do you think the whole world should know? This might sound cliché, but I think it is so important to just be kind. I have a hard time wrapping my head around how some people treat others. I feel it takes more energy to be mean/rude. No one’s perfect but in a general sense I think just trying to be a nice person is one of my top priorities in life and something I believe is extremely important.

And now, for a few rapid fire questions.

What does your training regime look like? We usually have 3.5 hour training sessions on the water. A typical block would be four days on, one day off but it definitely varies (sometimes we do longer blocks; five or six days). After the on the water session, I will try to get in a gym session. Sailing is extremely physically and mentally demanding so the gym doesn’t always happen especially if the water training was very physical.

What keeps you up at night? Visualizing sailing haha! Sometimes I will wake up in the middle of the night and not be able to sleep because I'm thinking about sailing. It’s a good and a bad problem to have I think.

What is your favorite moment in a sailing competition? To date, standing on top of the podium at the PanAmerican Games and hearing the National Anthem. It was a feeling I can't put words into.
Who are your role models? I look up to a lot of sailors and crossfit athletes. Mostly, I’m inspired by anyone with a goal/dream and seeing them pursue it no matter what it is.
What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you while sailing?I don’t know if this is weird, but once I saw a dolphin giving birth while sailing in Miami. I was really young, but it was super cool.
What’s your guilty-pleasure? The old Justin Bieber albums. I know every word to every song.
What’s your favorite Snow Monkey flavor? I seriously cannot decide between Chocolate and Matcha Green Tea.
                      What drives you? Improvement
What does being an “athlete” mean to you? Being an athlete to me means being powerful, strong, explosive, and in control of your own mind and body, and knowing you can always be better.

What’s next on the agenda for you? I head to New Zealand October 15th to begin training for our Worlds at the beginning of December which is our first half of the Olympic Trials.

In case you somehow missed it, we’d like to inform you that it is officially Fall - the season of tricks, treats and Pumpkin Spice Lattes.
We won’t pretend to be less basic than everyone else and claim we aren’t huge fans of the season, because lets be real we are def HUGE fans. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t completely over the whole pumpkin-spice-everything trend that’s been going on for far, far too long.
So, we had Chef Mel (aka our Marketing Manager) whip up two delicious recipes using Maple Cinnamon Snow Monkey to help fuel your Fall adventures. One takes “Pumpkin Spice” to a whole new level for those of you who are still down with the trend and the other doesn’t have anything “pumpkin” about it for those of you who are #OverIt.
                          Enjoy, Snow Monkeys!

                          New Look, Same Deliciousness

One day while staring into the frosted glass doors of the ice cream aisle, we realized something: The shelves behind those doors are busy. The grocery store itself is busy. But most importantly, you’re busy af. And when you do your weekly grocery shop, you need to be able to quickly find and discover the products that are best for you.

So, we decided we could do you a solid and make our packaging standout while still providing the natural, vibrant and powerful vibes you’ve come to know and love from Snow Monkey.

                          INTRODUCING SNOW MONKEY 2.0

                           * Reading not your thing? Watch this video instead.

As you can see, we changed a few things. But never fear, these pints are just as (if not more) delicious, nutritious and protein-packed than ever before.

Here’s what changed on all the pints:

                          HEAT SEALS

This is where the real magic is happening. If any of you have already gotten your hands on a new pint, you might have noticed our leadership team’s faces on the heat seals. Your reaction could have ranged anywhere from “wtf” to “oh my god this is the coolest thing ever!” We really hope it was the latter, but either way, here are the reasons why it’s actually really cool that we did this:

                          • We wanted to provide transparency around the diverse, female team creating this delicious ice cream and show why we wake up every morning to hustle pints all while having the most fun possible (let’s be real, these photos are ridiculous)
                          • We feel it is our responsibility to inspire others to go out and make their dreams reality regardless of gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, or any other factor that may set them apart from the misperceived “norm”
                          • There is still a long way to go for women in business. We still face many undiscussed and ignored hurdles that men do not – ranging from fundraising to equal pay to just being present in the room where big decisions are being made
                          • It is our goal as a company to crush glass ceilings, incite change in the conversation and views of women in business, and empower other women to be the bad asses they are

                          PINT ART

                          • We used to call our pints superfood ice treat, all the other plant-based ice creams call themselves frozen dessert, but tbh we’re better than all of those, so we decided to use Dairy Free Anytime Dessert because Snow Monkey is a dairy free dessert you can enjoy at any time of day without any guilt. See our logic there?
                          • Minimalism is all the rage, so we gave our pints solid color backgrounds with our signature foliage at the top
                          • Icons used to be all over the front, now there are two icons calling out protein and calorie content  – there’s tons of great things that set Snow Monkey apart from the rest, but these are two of the most important

And now for a few flavor-specific changes:

                          • Uhhh….who dis? We gave cacao and new name because quite frankly, very few people know what cacao is, but everybody knows chocolate. For those who do not know, cacao is chocolate in its unprocessed form
                          • Don’t worry, we still use fair-trade, non-alkalized cocoa powder – meaning we use the purest and most ethical form of chocolate in every pint

                          MAPLE CINNAMON –

                          • Sound familiar? This is cinnamon’s new and improved name to go along with its new and improved color scheme
                          • We added “maple” in front of cinnamon and changed the color scheme because unfortunately cinnamon was misunderstood. Many people thought it was spicy – like Big Red or Fireball – but, friends, Maple Cinnamon tastes (and now looks) like your favorite sweet yet savory cinnamon roll

                           MATCHA GREEN TEA –

                          • Ah, here’s one we recognize. The only thing that’s changed with this delicious pint of antioxidant gold is that we now source our matcha from Tenzo, a company dedicated to sourcing clean, premium-grade matcha straight from Japan
*Disclaimer – our old matcha was fire, too, but this stuff is on another level and whenever we find better ingredients than what we already have, we’ll always switch it up

                            AÇAI BERRY

                            • Same old, same old here except for the color change. Our Açai Berry pints now rock a purple color scheme. Because why? Because açai berries are purple not blue, that’s why

                            PASSION FRUIT –

                            • Every family has a perfect child, and this is ours. Nothing new here, folks

And that about sums it up, Tribe. We hope you enjoy the new look almost as much as you enjoy Snow Monkey itself and be sure to watch this video we made of our pints’ transformations.

                            Stay fit. Stay fly.

Work(out) From Home for the Holidays!

Between eating, lounging and being driven crazy by family, it can be hard to find time to get a workout in during the holidays. But never fear, Snow Monkey is here! We've compiled some of our favorite workouts you can do at home (and we made our co-founder do just that to prove it to ya).

                            Jump Squats

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and bend down in a squat position - be sure your knees don't go past your ankles. Jump explosively up to the first step. Then bend back down into a squat position. Congrats, you completed 1 jump squat. Now do that all the way up the steps and jog down when you're done 3 times.

                            Tricep Dips

Place you hands shoulder-width apart on a chair, couch, bench, sibling, whatever. Scoot your butt off the edge and slowly lower your butt towards the ground until your arms are bent at a 90 degree angle. Then slowly lift yourself back up, take a bite of Snow Monkey and repeat 12-15 times for 1 rep.

                            Glute Bridge

Assume the usual holiday-induced position: laying on the floor. Place your feet flat on the ground and close enough to your body that they just graze your fingertips. Slowly lift your hips off the ground until they form a diagonal line with your knees and shoulders. Then, lift your right leg and bring your knee towards your chest as if you are marching. Engage that core and be careful not to let your hips sag! Then bring your right leg back to the ground and repeat the march with your left leg. Do that combo 12-15 times for 1 rep.

                            Weighted Lunges

Grab a gallon of something, a heavy pot, one of your parent's prized antiques, or the family pet and get ready to lunge! First, stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart. Pick up your heavy object-of-choice. Take a step forward with your right leg and be sure to distribute your weight so your heel hits the ground first. Then, lower your body while bending your left knee until your right thigh is parallel to the floor. Lightly graze the floor with your left knee, then press into your right heel to bring the body back up. Return to the standing position your started in and repeat with your left leg. Do this 12-15 times for 1 rep.

                            Leg Circles

Back to laying on the floor with your arms at your side. Flex both feet and slowly raise them together until your legs are at a 45 degree angle. Then, separate your legs and bring them downwards in a circular motion until they are about 12 inches off the ground. Bring them back to together, still 12 inches off the ground, and repeat 12-15 times for 1 rep.

And voila - you are the fittest Snow Monkey in the jungle without leaving the comfort of your own home.
